CommunityCare Fund: Starting safety young in the Waikato

North Island Grid Upgrade Project (NIGUP) tower erection crews had a special audience recently, as Room 1 from Waerenga School got front row seats to a series of “lifts” on tower 124.
A group of five and six year-olds from the small, rural Waikato school watched with delight, as crews waved from the top of the 56m tower before completing the top section of a standard suspension tower.
Alliance Health and Safety Manager Steve Notman, says it was a really good opportunity to engage with the local school and talk about the project and safety around electricity.
“The kids have been watching the towers go up daily, so to give them the chance to watch the crews up close and try on the safety gear was great,” he said.
“It’s not every day that a transmission line is erected in your neighbourhood and it was good to connect our project with the local school.”
Waerenga School received $20,743 in April through the Transpower CommunityCare Fund. The funding is marked for the purchase of laptops and interactive whiteboards.
