Evaluation process and criteria
Finalists will be chosen by a panel from all of the nominations received, and the winners will then be chosen after an evaluation by the STAR Awards Selection Panel.
The STAR Awards Selection Panel will be appointed by the Central Safety Leadership Team (CSLT) and will be independent of each participating organisation. Judging of finalists will include field evaluations, as appropriate.
Selection criteria for Awards
The general criteria include:
- Leadership: The panel will be looking for evidence of leadership and initiative from teams or individuals for each of the nominations.
- Consistency: Awards will go beyond considering the one-off behaviours regarding safety, but the whole of the individual or team attitude towards safety will be evaluated.
- Minimising risk: The extent to which behaviours or actions have minimised risk are important to the overall evaluation. The panel will be looking for activity that has made a difference.
- Thinking outside of the box: The extent to which the team or individual has applied critical thinking to solve an issue or resolve a problem.
- Performance: How the team or individual action improves performance in terms of safety or health. The extent to which their actions 'make a difference'.
- Evidence of achievement: Where possible external verification of the achievement should be provided.
