History of the National Grid book
Book cover - Connecting the Country: New Zealand’s National Grid 1886-2007
Connecting the Country: New Zealand's National Grid 1886-2007 was written by public historian Helen Reilly, and is the culmination of three years' work.
The book tells the stories of the early engineers, surveyors, linesmen and operators, and describes how their commitment to 'keeping the lights on' is still central to the ethos of those who run the National Grid today.
It tells of how our country was wired, starting in the late 1800's, and with the first government transmission line at the turn of the old century near Rotorua - at 3.3 kV stepped down to 110 V, to the planning and installation of HVDC and the development of system operations.
'Connecting the Country' contains many photos, maps and diagrams which also tell a story, including documenting the changing safety standards.
The book was sponsored by Transpower and reflects the history of the National Grid and the industry.
