Transpower working to minimise risk to Nelson power supply
16 December 2011
Transpower is moving crews, temporary towers and equipment into the Nelson area in the unlikely event of towers on the Kikiwa to Stoke line being damaged by landslides. Patrols have identified earth movement near some towers.
Patrick Strange, Transpower's Chief Executive says the company is being prudent. "We are concerned and for that reason we will prepare for it. We’re bringing in crews and equipment, just in case."
If the Kikiwa to Stoke line was damaged, there could be power outages in the upper South Island. "While we would do everything we can to divert electricity from other areas, we could face some shortages until temporary towers were erected", said Patrick.
If needed, it takes at least ten hours for a temporary tower to be erected, depending on weather and accessibility.
