What we are doing

We need to continually operate, maintain and develop New Zealand's transmission network - the National Grid - to ensure we meet the ongoing electricity needs of New Zealanders.

We have a project to undertake over summer 2019/20 to replace the conductor (ie the wire) on a section of our HVDC line (Oteranga Bay-Haywards line) around the back of Johnsonville, Churton Park and over the motorway to Grenada North.

Why we're doing it

This line is part of the HVDC inter-island link that transports bulk electricity between the North and South Islands. This was last replaced in 1992, and with the prevailing western coastal, salt-laden winds, and after nearly 30 years of service the conductor is nearing the end of its life.

Will this impact on my power supply?

No.  If you live in the area you may notice increased construction noise and activity (trucks cranes) and there may be some periods of road control while we are pulling conductor (wire) above.  We do not expect there to be any disruption to your power supply.
