Course Information

The Substation Entry 1 (SE1) course is required by anyone working in a substation for longer than two days as per TP.SS 06.25 for competency to enter a Transpower substation and work under appropriate supervision.  The SE1 course is made up of 6 sections: 

Timeframes

There is an estimated 6 hours of learning time required to complete the eLearning modules and the webinar.  In addition to this you will need to arrange a supervised substation visit, and to complete the requirements of the on job observation.  

Section 1 and 2 must be completed before attending the webinar.  If you have not completed these sections, the trainer will remove you from the Webinar and your company will be invoiced the course withdrawal fee.

 

Learning outcomes

At the completion of this course learners will be able to:

  • Demonstrate awareness of the electricity supply industry
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Transpower substations
  • Demonstrate knowledge of work practices related to restricted areas
  • Apply health and safety procedures in a restricted area to carry out work under supervision
  • Demonstrate knowledge of on-site emergency procedures for a restricted area

 

Guidance for supervisors conducting the Substation Visit (Section 2)

  • The substation visit forms part of the training for SE1. 
  • To supervise this activity, you will need to be an SE2 Competency Holder or higher.
  • Use the Substation Visit Supervisor Guidance Note [ pdf 111.26 KB ] to ensure you cover all teaching points
  • You should work through the SSI Part A [ pdf 6.52 MB ] and SSI Part B [ pdf 669.58 KB ] with the learner. 
  • Your company will need to keep the completed SSI Part B [ pdf 669.58 KB ]: Checklist and Worksite Safety Plan (Tailgate) for a period of TWO (2) years.

Guidance for supervisors observing the On job Observation (Section 6)

  • This observation forms part of the overall assessment requirements for SE1. 
  • To supervise this activity, you will need to be an SE2 Competency Holder or higher. 
  • For this assessment the learner needs to enter a substation, and follow a plan to carry out General Work, and then exit the substation under supervision, in accordance with Transpower’s and your own company’s procedures.
  • As supervisor, you will need to observe and support the learner, as a part of your work party.

  • Your company will need to keep the completed On Job Observation form (above), a  SSI Part B [ pdf 669.58 KB ]: Checklist (if this was the learner’s first visit to the substation where the observation will take place) and the Worksite Safety Plan (Tailgate) for a period of TWO (2) years.
