I interned within the Power Systems Group in the Power Systems Engineering Team. The Power Systems Group is responsible for analysing the current and future power system, updating its models in tools when an asset is commissioned or decommissioned and reviewing and testing measures for when something goes wrong. Within that, Power Systems Engineers analyse and review the power system.
As an intern in this team I worked on using SQL to take data from dispatch solves that had been recently moved into a new database and collate it into a dashboard that can flag abnormal differences in values and to make it easier for the engineers to investigate what happened, and to determine if it is cause for concern. To do this I had to learn a lot of new skills including writing SQL, using PowerBI and how to effectively organise and run meetings. Additionally, I have learnt a lot about the role Transpower plays in the sector and how it plays it.
Over my time as an intern I have had many cool experiences such as a site visit to Wilton substation, a session in the control training room and a half day shadowing the control room.
