New Zealand’s electricity system is changing rapidly, and the grid needs to remain reliable, resilient and affordable while meeting an increased demand for electricity. Transpower needs to plan its transmission investments carefully.
Every year we publish an Integrated Transmission Plan (ITP). This is a suite of three documents that together lay out our detailed plans for the grid over the next 10 years.
The Integrated Transmission Plan (ITP) Narrative provides an introduction and overview to the suite. It presents an overall roadmap and our high-level plans for the transmission network. This is supported by the more detailed analysis in the following three documents.
The AMP is our detailed long-term maintenance and investment plan for all of the assets in our existing transmission network. The plan looks at each type of grid asset that Transpower owns – transmission lines, towers and poles, substations, transformers, and protection and control systems – and presents a detailed snapshot of where they are in their life cycle. It details Transpower’s plan for the investment required to manage and maintain these assets, to ensure that electricity continues to be delivered safely, reliably, and at the lowest reasonable long-term cost.
Transmission Planning Report (TPR)
The TPR is an overview of Aotearoa New Zealand’s current grid capability, and a forecast of the capability and expansion we think will be needed in the coming 15 years. The report includes detail on the grid enhancements to which Transpower is currently committed, and the enhancements we believe will be needed in the future. We publish these reports every two years.
The Service Measures Report is Transpower's performance and service accountability report. It describes the framework used to define and measure the transmission services we provide for Aotearoa New Zealand. This report tracks our performance against RCP4 measures and targets.
While intended to meet our regulatory requirements, our ITP suite has also been prepared to provide our stakeholders and customers with an overview of our transmission business, both now and over the coming 10 years.
