Background
Transpower has seven smaller substation sites around the country that require an annual outage to consumers in order to complete our routine maintenance. These are great places to live in New Zealand, but in the same way as they don't have many of the features of larger towns and cities such as commercial airports and four-lane motorways, they also don't have more than one electricity transmission line or transformer which can provide back-up supply during maintenance.
Areas that have annual outages include:
- Ohakune
- Waverley
- Mataroa (Taihape/Waiouru)
- Waiotahe (Opotiki, Te Kaha)
- Kikiwa (Nelson Lakes, St Arnaud, Tapawera)
- Albury (Fairlie, Cave)
- Tekapo (Mount Cook Village)
It is possible over time as these areas expand with more consumers or businesses that another line or transformer could be warranted. The relevant local lines company would initiate that process as they would need to pay for it in the first instance.
We appreciate these outages can be inconvenient, but they are an essential part of ensuring these areas have a reliable source of electricity. We work closely with the local lines companies to schedule them at times that create the least disruption.
As dates are confirmed for each outage each year more information will appear for each location on this page.
