By planning now, we can ensure New Zealand has the right grid, in the right place, at the right time to enable New Zealand’s energy future, a growing and thriving economy, and our transition to net zero.
We know there are many possible options for how New Zealand’s energy system will evolve and grow to meet future demand.
Our aim is to identify the lowest-cost option that delivers a reliable and sustainable electricity system for everyone in New Zealand – industry, business, communities and households.
Affordability and security are top of mind in our planning. Any potential investment in the grid must be responsible and must only occur when there is clear benefit to everyone.
The Grid Blueprint will guide our least-regrets transmission investments in the 2030s and 2040s. This will ensure the electricity system is ready to meet the needs of New Zealand in 2050.
About the name
‘Kanapu’ means both ‘lightning’ and ‘bright’. Lightning as the raw form of electricity is a key symbol on the pou whakairo (carving) in the entrance hall at Waikoukou, Transpower’s head office. ‘Te Kanapu’ speaks about the electrification and illumination of our country and Transpower’s goals for a bright, energised future.
