What are we doing?
We are investigating potential electricity infrastructure upgrades in the Tararua and Wairarapa region, to resolve transmission constraints and enable connection of significant new renewable generation.
This region is experiencing a surge in renewable generation projects with over 1,000 MW of new solar and wind generation in our connection pipeline.
Our investigation will specifically cover the 110 kV transmission lines Haywards to Waipawa, and from Bunnythorpe to Woodville. We are also considering additions of 220 kV connection and interconnection assets in the region, taking a coordinated regional approach to unlock large-scale renewable generation development and improve connection with the 220 kV core grid.
Without upgrades to the existing regional grid, new generation will be constrained, impacting regional economic opportunities and national electrification. Enabling anticipatory transmission investment could unlock significant renewable capacity, supporting Aotearoa’s transition toward more renewable energy, more affordable electricity prices and electrification of how we live and work.
Timeline and updates
We are seeking the views of generation developers and other interested stakeholders to inform and shape our transmission plans, and ensure any investments provide the most economic options to get these abundant energy resources to market.
The consultation period is open from Tuesday 5 May, with submissions due by Monday 15 June.
You can see more information here, including our consultation documents and how to provide us with your feedback.
