Information about planning for increased electricity capacity in the western Bay of Plenty

We are replacing the conductor on the Otara to Flatbush section of the Ōtāhuhu–Whakamaru transmission lines in Auckland.

Transpower is working to improve the resilience of the Hawke’s Bay’s electricity supply by strengthening our Redclyffe substation. The substation was severely damaged during Cyclone Gabrielle in 2023.

Transpower is replacing joints on an underground electricity cable in Auckland between our Brownhill and Pakūranga substations.

Transpower plans to replace the ageing electricity cables that cross Cook Strait at the end of the decade and is considering whether to also increase the capacity of the cables at the same time.

Transpower is investigating possible electricity infrastructure investments for the upper South Island, to ensure a reliable power supply for the future as the region grows and more homes and businesses switch their energy use to electricity.

Transpower plans to replace the transmission towers in and around Newlands and Woodridge in Wellington with modern steel poles, with work happening during 2024 and 2025.

We are replacing the conductor (wire) on the Bunnythorpe-Wilton transmission line in Wellington.

We are undertaking a project to build a new control relay room at our Penrose substation site and decommission the existing building.

We are undertaking a project to refurbish the eight HVDC Pole 2 transformers.

We will soon complete the construction of a digital substation laboratory in our Wellington office.
