About our summer intern programme

About our summer intern programme

Our 2025/26 Summer Intern Programme runs from mid-November to mid-February. Check out the information below to find out more!

What’s the programme about?

The programme gives you a fantastic opportunity to experience Transpower, while gaining some of the hours required to graduate.

It’s also a great way to position yourself to become part of our two-year graduate programme once you have completed your studies.

Every year we host ~25 summer interns. You’ll work closely with experienced engineers, a buddy and with a Transpower YoPro (young professional) to learn what it takes to have an engineering career in the electricity industry. Check out the profiles below to read about the real experiences of our interns!

You'll work in teams across the business, and gain a broad knowledge of what we do, how we work, and who we work with. It’s an awesome experience that provides you with skills and capability to support your future career goals and aspirations.

Degree: Conjoint civil engineering & accounting

University: University of Auckland

Division: Grid Development, Tactical engineering

Teams: Cost estimation, Engineering consultants & Transmission Lines

"My manager ensured I worked on a variety of projects related to my discipline and other areas to enhance my learning and professional development. I was able to develop my skills in Power BI, grillage foundations, data analysis and business processes, alongside having the opportunity to visit the Haywards substation and learn about the HVDC connection. Additionally, I participated in meetings between Transpower and consultants, gaining insights into how companies collaborate to ensure the upkeep of the national grid and forming connections with key individuals within the industry."

"Overall, my time at Transpower has been nothing short of spectacular. It was an incredible opportunity to apply and expand my skill set while gaining a deeper understanding of electricity and the complexity of keeping the lights on. Beyond the technical experience, the supportive and collaborative culture at Transpower, along with the incredibly knowledgeable and friendly people I had the pleasure of working with, made this experience even more enriching."

Degree: Electrical & Electronic Engineering

University: Victoria

Division: Operations

Team: Power Systems Group, Engineering Assurance

"My summer project aligned closely with my specialisation of Renewable Energy Systems and was broken into two key parts. In part one, I investigated the daily, monthly and seasonal solar panel generation curves of two solar farms to see how the average generation at the time of peak load changes throughout the year.  This was important as the script I wrote for this section of my project can be used to verify solar trigger assumptions in the EMI case."
